Oil Change Intervals for Vancouver Driving

MAINTENANCE GUIDE

There is no single oil-change interval that is correct for every vehicle. The manufacturer schedule, required oil specification and the way the vehicle is actually driven are more useful than a universal kilometre rule.

Start with the manufacturer schedule

Modern engines can have very different oil requirements. Use the maintenance schedule for the exact model/year and confirm the specified viscosity and oil standard.

Why short trips can matter

Frequent short trips may not allow the engine and oil to remain at full operating temperature for long periods. Depending on the manufacturer, this kind of use can fall under a severe-use schedule.

Do not use colour alone to judge oil life

Engine oil can darken as it carries contaminants in normal service. Colour by itself does not tell you the remaining oil life or whether the correct interval has passed.

Low oil between services needs attention

If the level repeatedly drops, topping it up is not the same as solving the cause. Consumption and leaks should be discussed with the shop, especially if the change is sudden or significant.

Oil-life monitors are useful—but still vehicle-specific

Many vehicles calculate oil life from operating conditions. Follow the owner’s manual for how the system is intended to be used and reset after service.

Combine maintenance efficiently

An oil-change visit can also be a convenient time to review other due maintenance, visible leaks, filters, fluid condition or tire wear without turning every visit into unnecessary repairs.
